        Uses: what can back-painted glass be used for?

        Thanks to its opaque colour and smooth surface, back-painted glass replaces paint, tiles or laminate wherever you want a clean, easy-to-clean finish:

        • Kitchen: splashback behind the worktop, cooker hood splashback behind the hob, cladding for an island or a recess.
        • Furniture: wardrobe and walk-in wardrobe doors, unit fronts, chest of drawers or desk tops, shelves.
        • Decoration: wall panels, headboards, dry-wipe marker writing boards, office or shop signage.

        The paint is designed for the dry rooms of the home. For a bathroom, a shower or outdoors, choose enamelled glass, whose colour is fired into the glass during toughening.

        Budget: the price of made-to-measure back-painted glass

        The price of back-painted glass is calculated by surface area (m²) and depends on the thickness of the glass and the colour. White and black, the most popular, as well as the colours in the Plakglass selection, are offered at a more attractive price than the other colours in the RAL, NCS and Pantone charts. Depending on your project, the following may be added:

        • low-iron glass, recommended for whites and light colours;
        • a matt finish (back-painted frosted glass);
        • the shape (L-shaped, U-shaped, round, arched…) and rounded corners;
        • socket cut-outs, holes, drilling and cut-outs.

        The configurator displays the exact price with every choice, with no quotation to wait for. To keep to your budget: go for white, black or a colour from the Plakglass selection, stick to 6 mm for a splashback or wall cladding (there is no need for a thicker panel), keep low-iron glass for light colours — for black or a dark colour, clear glass is enough — and group pieces in the same colour into a single order. Compared with tiles, back-painted glass can be fitted in a few hours, by bonding, with no grout lines or major works.

        Protection: strength, heat and safety

        The glass is toughened to EN 12150: around five times more resistant than ordinary glass to impacts and temperature differences, it shatters into small, blunt pieces if it breaks. The paint, applied to the back, is protected by the glass on the room side and by a safety film on the wall side, which also holds fragments together.

        • Heat: 6 mm minimum behind a hob, all hob types; with gas, 10 to 15 cm between the flame and the glass.
        • Hygiene: smooth, joint-free surface that does not hold grease or dirt.
        • Long-lasting colour: protected behind the glass, the paint does not scratch or fade with use.
        • Edges: flat polished, not sharp.

        Colours and finish: choosing the right colour

        The configurator first offers a Plakglass selection of the most popular colours, at a more attractive price, and the colours of the year, followed by the full RAL, NCS and Pantone charts. Already know your colour code? Enter it directly.

        Low-iron glass, almost colourless, reproduces the colour without altering it: it is essential for whites, pastels and bright colours. Clear glass, which is slightly green, is suitable for blacks and dark colours. A gloss finish gives a deep mirror effect; a matt finish, produced on frosted glass, gives a satin look without reflections that shows marks less.

        The colours displayed on screen are for guidance only: to be sure of your choice, compare with a physical colour chart.

        Every shape and every type of edgework

        The shape selector gives access to all our cuts: rectangle, square, round, oval, oblong, half-moon, L-shaped, U-shaped, T-shaped, arched, shapes with arcs and shapes with cut corners. Each corner can be square, clipped, rounded or angled. Then add fixing holes, single, double or triple socket cut-outs, round holes, notches and rectangular cut-outs: the configurator automatically checks the minimum distances from the edges and between cut-outs required for toughening. All edgework is carried out before toughening and painting; no machining is possible after delivery.

        Frequently asked questions about back-painted glass

        What is the difference between back-painted glass and enamelled glass?

        Back-painted glass is painted on the back with organic paint after toughening: it offers the widest choice of colours (RAL, NCS, Pantone) and a very glossy finish, but it is for indoor use only. Enamelled glass receives an enamel fired during toughening, which fuses with the glass: the range of colours is more limited, but it is UV- and weather-resistant and can be installed outdoors.

        Does the price of back-painted glass vary with the colour?

        Yes: white and black, the most popular colours, as well as the Plakglass selection shown at the top of the configurator, are offered at a more attractive price. The price also depends on the surface area, the thickness, the choice of low-iron glass, a matt finish, the shape and the edgework (socket cut-outs, holes, cut-outs). It is displayed live in the configurator.

        Clear or low-iron glass for back-painted glass?

        Standard clear glass has a slight green tint that alters light colours: white looks greenish and yellow tends towards green. Low-iron glass, almost colourless, reproduces the colour faithfully: it is recommended for whites, pastels and bright colours. For black or a very dark colour, clear glass is enough.

        Which standards does Plakglass back-painted glass meet?

        The glass is thermally toughened safety glass to European standard EN 12150: around five times stronger than ordinary glass, it shatters into small, blunt pieces if it breaks. Back-painted glass belongs to the family of painted glass for indoor use, covered by standard EN 16477; a safety film is bonded to the back of the paint.

        Can back-painted glass be used outdoors or in a bathroom?

        No: organic paint is not designed to withstand UV, frost and weather. Back-painted glass is for indoor use, in dry rooms. For outdoors, as well as for a bathroom or shower, choose enamelled glass, whose colour is fired into the glass.

        How do I fit back-painted glass?

        Back-painted glass is bonded to a sound, flat, dry surface with a special adhesive compatible with the paint (available as an option in the basket), applied in dabs; any other adhesive may damage the paint. Stand the panel on spacers to keep a 2 to 3 mm gap, leave to dry for 24 hours, remove the spacers and seal the joint with silicone. Do not remove the safety film bonded to the back.

        Can back-painted glass be drilled or recut after delivery?

        No: toughened glass can no longer be cut or drilled without breaking. All holes, socket cut-outs, notches and cut-outs must be placed in the configurator; they are made in the workshop before toughening and painting. Measure precisely and mark the position of sockets and switches before ordering.
