Made-to-measure glass table top
What size should my table top be?
Dimensions for a rectangular table top
Glass can protect your solid wood table or create a sleek, designer table in your home. For a rectangular top, the length and width vary according to the number of diners:
- 4 people: 120 × 80 cm
- 6 people: 160 × 90 cm
- 8 people: 200 × 100 cm
- 10 people: 240 × 100 cm
- 12 people: 280 × 100 cm
These dimensions provide enough space for plates, dishes and cutlery, while leaving comfortable room to move around.
Dimensions for a round table top
Indoors or outdoors, round tables are very much in fashion: as well as their clean look, this shape encourages a convivial atmosphere where everyone can enjoy their guests' company. For a round table top, the diameter is the main criterion:
- 4 people: 90–100 cm
- 6 people: 120 cm
- 8 people: 140 cm
- 10 people: 160 cm
- 12 people: 180 cm
This shape spreads diners evenly and gives easy access to the dishes, while making the most of the space available in the room.
Dimensions for an oval table top
An oval table top is perfect for a large dining room, and its designer shape suits a minimalist look in a modern interior. For an oval top, the length is slightly greater than that of an equivalent rectangular top, and the width stays similar:
- 4 people: 130 × 80 cm
- 6 people: 170 × 90 cm
- 8 people: 210 × 100 cm
- 10 people: 250 × 100–110 cm
- 12 people: 290 × 100–110 cm
An oval top combines the space and circulation of a rectangular top with the flowing lines of rounded ends, offering optimum comfort for all diners.
Dimensions for an octagonal table top
Choose an octagonal shape for a unique, architectural coffee table and treat yourself to a designer piece you will not find in your friends' homes. A unique top for a different interior. For an octagonal top, the dimensions are calculated from the diagonal or the maximum width:
- 4 people: 100 × 100 cm
- 6 people: 130 × 130 cm
- 8 people: 150 × 150 cm
- 10 people: 180 × 180 cm
- 12 people: 200 × 200 cm
An octagonal top spreads diners evenly and offers enough space for meals, while remaining suitable for garden tables, dining rooms or bespoke creations.
Glass tops for tables
What thickness for a glass table top?
For a glass top on a table base, the thickness of the glass depends on the size and shape of the top and on the number of diners. In general, 10 to 12 mm toughened glass is suitable for a standard size, providing strength and stability. Larger tops or those intended for heavy use may require a thickness of 12 to 15 mm to ensure safety and prevent deflection. This thickness also maintains a uniform appearance and ensures the furniture's durability.
For a top placed on an existing table, as a table cover, the thickness can be slightly less since structural support is already provided by the furniture underneath. 6 to 10 mm toughened glass is generally sufficient to cover and protect the surface while remaining easy to handle and install. The main aim is to protect the original surface while keeping it flat and functional, without compromising safety.
What are the advantages of toughened glass for a table top?
Toughened glass table top
Toughened glass is a strong, safe material for table tops. It withstands impacts and temperature changes better than standard glazing. If it breaks, it shatters into small, blunt pieces, reducing the risk of injury. A toughened glass table top is also easy to clean, does not hold stains and keeps its smooth surface, making it suitable for all tables, whether kitchen, coffee or outdoor tables.
Tinted glass table top
A tinted glass table top offers an attractive alternative while retaining the strength of toughened glass. It can be tinted black, grey or bronze as required. Tinted glass reduces the transparency of the top while still letting light through. Black tint is less transparent than the other colours, giving a more discreet surface while preserving brightness. It helps match the table to the rest of the furniture or the décor of the room. It is also suitable for bespoke creations and renovation projects.
Frosted glass table top
Frosted toughened glass combines safety with a uniform visual effect. Its matt surface diffuses light and reduces reflections, while retaining the strength of toughened glass. It also protects the surfaces underneath and offers a discreet alternative to clear or tinted tops. Frosted glass is suitable for living room tables, coffee tables or side tables, for practical, safe use.
Uses of a glass table top
Dining table
The top provides a practical surface for meals and for setting out tableware. Its smooth surface is quick to clean, making maintenance easy. It also creates a uniform area of use, improves the stability of items placed on it and properly protects the existing base. A made-to-measure dining table top is suited to everyday use, family meals and get-togethers.
Coffee table
A coffee table top provides a handy place to put books, remote controls, accessories or useful items in a living room. It protects the base from signs of wear and provides a stable surface for regular use. A coffee table top fits easily into a living space and helps keep everyday items organised.
Round / circular table
Round or circular tables suit spaces where people need to move around freely. The shape makes the whole dining area easy to reach and helps make the most of the space available. It is generally used for a living room table or a meeting table. It offers a uniform surface for meals, objects or everyday activities.
Oval table
Oval tables provide a surface suited to spaces that need an elongated shape without corners. This layout makes it easy to move around the furniture and provides an optimised area for meals, meetings or everyday activities. The oval format can be used to replace an existing top, create a table or protect a structure already in place.
Table cover / Covering a table
Covering a table with a glass top protects the original surface and extends the life of the furniture. This cover limits knock marks, reduces the impact of moisture or liquids and preserves the material underneath. A made-to-measure glass table cover also keeps the surface level if it is uneven or marked.
Garden table / outdoor table
A garden table top provides a surface for meals and outdoor activities. It withstands changes in the weather well and is easy to clean after use. It provides a flat area for items during a meal, drinks or time spent outdoors. It can be used with different types of structure: metal, resin, wood or upcycled bases.
Create a made-to-measure table
A made-to-measure top lets you create a complete table with legs, trestles or any stable structure. This solution is used to design a table suited to a specific space or a particular need. You are free to choose the size, height and final use of the furniture: a glass table top combined with a custom base lets you create a unique piece, whether for the living room, garden or kitchen.
DIY – Turning an object into a table
You can turn an object into a table without any complicated work. A crate, a block, a barrel, a sculpted leg or a reclaimed base can become a table as long as it can support the top. This lets you repurpose an existing item and give it a new function. This type of DIY use is part of a reuse or personalised design approach.
Updating an old table
A made-to-measure top lets you update an old table while keeping its structure. It covers the surface, hides worn areas and provides a more practical surface for everyday use. This solution avoids replacing the furniture and lets you keep its character while making it more practical.
Covering and protecting a kitchen worktop
A glass top placed on a worktop protects the surface against moisture, splashes and the wear and tear of food preparation. Its uniform surface makes cleaning easy. It also keeps the original worktop material intact, whether wood, marble, stone, stainless steel or laminate.
Replacing a garden table top
Replacing the top of a garden table extends the life of outdoor furniture without changing the whole structure. This involves removing the old top, measuring the support area and fitting a glass top compatible with the existing frame. This type of work applies to many tables from leading brands such as Hespéride, Fermob, Grosfillex or Kettler, whose structures can take a standard or made-to-measure replacement top.
Made-to-measure manufacturing from a glass panel lets you renew or improve a table without modifying its structure. This solution adapts to all shapes and all uses, from protecting a worktop to renovating outdoor furniture. It offers a simple alternative to extend the life of furniture.
Frequently asked questions about glass table tops
What thickness of toughened glass should I choose for a table top?
The thickness depends on the use and the spacing of the supports:
- 6 to 8 mm: table cover placed on an existing table (protection), small side table;
- 8 to 10 mm: coffee table, console table, sofa end table;
- 10 to 12 mm: dining table on a base, garden table;
- 12 to 15 mm: large table (over 2 m), widely spaced legs;
- 15 to 19 mm: very large top, meeting table, top with a slight overhang.
If in doubt, choose the next thickness up: the top will flex less and look more substantial.
Is a toughened glass table top safe?
Yes. Toughened glass (Securit glass, standard EN 12150) is around five times more resistant to impacts and temperature differences than ordinary glass. If it breaks, it shatters into small, blunt pieces, which limits the risk of injury. The edges are supplied flat polished (JPP), not sharp. It is the recommended glass for any table, indoors or outdoors.
Can a glass table top be drilled (parasol hole, leg opening)?
Yes, provided it is specified when you order: toughened glass cannot be drilled or cut after toughening. Add the holes (for example the central parasol hole of a garden table), notches and cut-outs in the configurator; they are made before toughening, and the configurator checks the minimum distances from the edges.
How do I measure a round, oval or rectangular table top?
Measure the required finished dimensions to the nearest millimetre: the length and width for a rectangular or oval top, the diameter for a round top. To replace an existing top, measure the old top or the frame that holds it. For a protective cover, use the dimensions of the table or take off a few millimetres so that the glass does not overhang. The manufacturing tolerance is -1 / +1 mm.
Which glass should I choose for a table: clear, low-iron, frosted or tinted?
Clear glass is the most economical, with a slight green tint visible on the edge. Low-iron glass removes this green tinge and faithfully reproduces the colours of the base: ideal in greater thicknesses. Frosted glass, matt and translucent, reduces reflections and makes fingerprints less visible. Tinted glass (grey, bronze, black) partly hides the structure and goes well with dark furniture.
