Clear toughened glass floor plate under a wood-burning stove, protecting the parquet while leaving it visible

      Made-to-measure floor plate

A floor plate is an essential accessory: it makes the area around your stove or fireplace safe. It effectively protects the floor covering from embers, heat and knocks while adding a decorative touch.

Made to measure in toughened glass. Resistant to thermal shock up to + 200 °C, this type of glass is ideal under a wood-burning stove or in front of a fireplace. The edges are non-sharp and polished (flat polished edge). If you would like to match a plate to the colours of your interior, you can configure an enamelled glass plate.

      Installing the floor plate

Floor plate under a wood or pellet stove

When installing, the stove must not sit at the edge of the floor plate. Leave a minimum of 20 cm at the sides and back, and 50 cm at the front. If the floor covering is flammable, the protective plate becomes compulsory and must extend more than 50 cm at the front. The protective plate is essential for a safe installation.

Floor plate in front of a fireplace

A fireplace floor plate is installed in front of the insert. It must be large enough to handle logs and carry out cleaning.

      Toughened glass floor protection plates

A floor plate is essential to guarantee both the safety and the durability of your installation. Placed under or in front of the heating appliance, floor protection plates mainly serve to protect the floor covering from flying embers, sparks, high temperatures and the dirt generated by everyday use.

Effective and attractive: a glass protection plate provides an effective heat barrier while adding an elegant touch to your interior. Whether in clear or coloured toughened glass, this glass protection plate suits every decorating style and protects the floor effectively. The shapes available (arched, curved, round, teardrop, oblong, square with rounded corners) and the various finishes allow a perfect fit, whatever the floor covering and the position of the stove or fireplace in the room.

Beyond its protective role, a floor protection plate enhances the heating area and creates a visually harmonious space. Its transparency or colour shows off the floor material while providing an attractive, safe separation. Use enamelled glass for colour, or transparent black, grey or bronze tinted glass if the aim is to create a visual marker.

From a technical point of view, the floor plate acts as an insulating surface that stops radiant heat from damaging a sensitive floor covering (wooden flooring, laminate, vinyl, etc.). Easy to install and clean, it offers reliable protection with everyday use of a wood-burning stove.

By choosing a made-to-measure floor plate, you are choosing a product that is functional, safe and durable, designed to extend the life of your floor covering and protect it from heat and impact. Available in several shapes, sizes and finishes, the floor protection plate for wood-burning stoves suits all types of heating appliances and interiors.

Whether in front of an insert or under a wood-burning stove, our floor plates, made in France, are offered at the best prices at Plakglass.

Frequently asked questions about stove floor plates

What glass thickness should I choose for a floor plate under a wood or pellet stove?

The thickness depends on the weight of the stove and how it rests on the floor (recommendations valid up to 300 kg):

      • stove under 150 kg: 6 mm minimum on a solid base, 8 mm minimum on legs;
      • stove from 150 to 300 kg: 8 mm minimum on a solid base, 10 mm minimum on legs.

A stove on legs concentrates its weight on small areas, so it needs thicker glass than a stove with a solid base. For a plate placed in front of a fireplace or insert, with no appliance standing on it, 6 mm is enough. Above 300 kg, please contact us before ordering.

How big should a stove floor protection plate be?

The plate must extend beyond the stove's footprint by at least 20 cm at the sides and back, and at least 50 cm at the front, on the loading door side. Example: for a stove 50 cm wide and 45 cm deep, allow a plate at least 90 cm wide (50 + 20 + 20) and 115 cm deep (45 + 20 + 50). For a plate in front of a fireplace, allow enough space to handle logs and clean the hearth.

Is a floor plate compulsory under a wood-burning stove?

Yes, whenever the floor is combustible or heat-sensitive: wooden flooring, laminate, vinyl, carpet or PVC flooring. The protective plate must then extend more than 50 cm in front of the stove to catch embers and sparks when loading. On tiles or stone, it is not always required but protects against impact, stains and cinders. Always check your appliance's installation instructions, which may require greater distances.

Does toughened glass withstand the heat of a stove or fireplace?

Yes. Toughened glass (safety glass, standard EN 12150) withstands thermal shock up to a temperature difference of around 200 °C, far more than the heat reaching the floor under a stove or in front of a fire. It is also around five times more impact-resistant than ordinary glass and, if it breaks, it shatters into small, blunt fragments. The edges are supplied flat polished and not sharp.

Which glass should I choose for a floor plate: clear, tinted or enamelled?

Clear or low-iron glass lets the floor show through and stays discreet; low-iron glass removes the green tinge visible on the edge. Frosted glass gives a matt look that softens footprints and ash marks. Tinted grey, bronze or black (Dark Grey) glass visually marks out the stove area while remaining transparent. Black enamelled glass is opaque: it completely hides the floor and matches a black stove.

How do I install and clean a glass floor plate?

The floor plate is simply laid flat, without adhesive or fixings, on a clean, level floor: an uneven floor creates pressure points that weaken the glass. Lay the plate before installing the stove, then position the appliance without sliding it. For cleaning, use a glass cleaner or soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid abrasive products and sponges, and let the stove cool before cleaning.
