Coloured glass: grey, bronze, green, blue (Dark Blue) or black (Dark Grey) tinted glass
Smoked toughened glass
Transparent coloured glass is body-tinted glass: it is coloured while remaining transparent, unlike grey back-painted glass, where a coat of paint is applied to clear or low-iron glass.
Plakglass offers smoked toughened glass in five tints: Parsol bronze, Parsol grey, Parsol green, Dark Grey (black) and Dark Blue (blue), from 4 to 12 mm thick depending on the tint. These tinted glasses are only available toughened, five to seven times stronger than standard glass. To be toughened, tinted glass must have a diagonal of at least 250 mm.
With the configurator, you get made-to-measure tinted glass with internal cut-outs, edge or corner cut-outs, and settings for each corner (rounded or clipped). Bevelled edges are also available. Tinted glass comes in various shapes: rectangle, round, half-round, cut corner and many more.
It is used as a floor plate in front of a fireplace, for decoration, to protect furniture, as a shelf, to replace interior glazing, as a table top, in a glass partition, in furniture or as a shower screen.
Good to know: the thicker the glass, the more pronounced the tint. All tinted glass is also available as laminated glass for balustrades.

Smoked glass, tinted glass or Parsol glass: what is the difference?
They are the same product: a body-tinted glass, meaning it is coloured during manufacture by adding metal oxides to the molten batch. The colour runs through the full thickness of the glass, which remains transparent.
- Tinted glass (or coloured glass): the technical term, valid for all colours (grey, bronze, green, blue, black).
- Smoked glass: the everyday term for dark tinted glass, grey or black, reminiscent of a "smoked" pane.
- Parsol glass: a trade name that has entered everyday language to refer to grey, bronze or green tinted glass.
Not to be confused with back-painted glass, which is painted on the back and opaque, nor with a tinted film stuck onto clear glass, which can scratch or peel off. Body-tinted glass does not fade, and can be toughened and processed just like clear glass. The thicker it is, the deeper its tint.
What is the difference between tinted glass and grey back-painted glass?
Tinted glass is body-tinted: the colour is part of the glass itself, which remains transparent. Grey back-painted glass is clear or low-iron glass with a coat of paint applied to the back: it is opaque and completely hides whatever is behind it.
What tinted glass colours are available?
Five tints are available in toughened glass: grey, bronze, green, black (Dark Grey) and blue (Dark Blue). The available thicknesses vary by tint: 4 to 12 mm for grey, 4 to 10 mm for bronze and green, 6 to 10 mm for Dark Grey, 6 and 8 mm for Dark Blue.
Does the colour change with the thickness of tinted glass?
Yes. The thicker the glass, the more pronounced the tint, because the colour depends on the thickness of glass the light passes through. The same grey glass looks lighter in 4 mm than in 10 mm: bear this in mind when choosing the thickness, as well as strength.
Is tinted glass available as laminated glass for balustrades?
Yes, all tints (grey, bronze, green, Dark Grey and Dark Blue) are also available in laminated glass, which is compulsory for uses with a risk of falling, such as a balustrade. Toughened glass alone is not suitable for this use.
Is tinted glass suitable for a shower screen or a sliding door?
Yes, it is a common use: toughened tinted glass withstands moisture just like clear glass, and its colouring also adds privacy and a decorative look. It does not fade over time, as the tint runs through the body of the glass.
What standard does toughened tinted glass meet?
Plakglass tinted glass is a thermally toughened safety glass conforming to European standard EN 12150 ("Thermally toughened soda lime silicate safety glass"): it defines the toughening process, tolerances and fragmentation test, as the glass must break into small, blunt pieces. The body-tinted base glass is float glass conforming to standard EN 572. For a balustrade, you need laminated safety glass, covered by standard EN 14449.
What technical points should I know about tinted glass?
Tinted glass is only available in a gloss finish: a frosted finish is not available on tinted glass. To be toughened, it must have a diagonal of at least 250 mm. Holes, notches, cut-outs, rounded or clipped corners and bevelled edges are made before toughening, according to your configuration.
