Kitchen splashback in frosted back-painted glass

      The toughened glass splashback

A splashback in the colour of your kitchen

Glass splashbacks are increasingly replacing tiles in kitchens. Shape, dimensions, cut-outs and colour: everything can be customised.

At PlakGlass, we only use toughened glass, five to seven times stronger than ordinary glass. Behind the hob, the sink or across a whole wall, a coloured splashback brings light and character to the kitchen, as a single panel or in several pieces.

All colours are also available in made-to-measure back-painted glass for a cupboard door, wall cladding or a furniture top.

Discover our wide range of colours now and configure your toughened glass splashback.

        Made-to-measure glass splashbacks

        How is a splashback made?

Each splashback is cut to the dimensions of your wall, edge-worked (polished edges, corners, socket cut-outs), then toughened: toughened glass becomes five to seven times stronger than standard glazing. For a coloured splashback, the glass is then painted on its back face in our workshops. Glass splashbacks are gradually replacing tiles in the kitchen. In wet areas, such as a shower, made-to-measure enamelled glass is preferred.

Colour applied to the back of the splashback

Several thin coats of paint are applied in a controlled atmosphere to the back face of the glass. The visible face stays smooth: the colour is seen through the glass, which gives it depth and brilliance. The back is then covered with a protective film that prevents scratches during delivery and installation, ensures light shades are opaque and protects the paint from adhesives. This film must not be removed.

A splashback for indoor kitchen use

Back-painted splashbacks are for indoor use only. For outdoor use or a wet area (shower), an enamelled glass splashback is the right solution: its colour is fired into the glass. As for colours, anything is possible: timeless black or white, terracotta, midnight blue, fir green… In toughened glass, a splashback resists impact, scratches and heat, and forms a continuous, joint-free surface that is easy to clean. For a more understated look, choose a matt finish on frosted glass.

What are the advantages of a toughened glass splashback?

Heat resistance: toughened glass withstands temperatures of up to 200 °C and effectively protects the wall behind the hob.
Made to measure to the millimetre: the splashback fits exactly between the worktop and the wall units, around the extractor hood and the cooking area.
Integrated cut-outs: power sockets, switches, fixing holes, corner or edge notches are made before toughening.
Your choice of colour: on clear or low-iron glass, in a gloss or matt finish, from RAL, NCS and Pantone shades; black and white remain the most popular. Metallic glass gives a gold or brass effect that is easier to clean than metal.
For worktops, tables and outdoor use, enamelled glass is recommended: its colour, fired into the glass, withstands daily use, moisture and the weather.

What can a glass splashback be used for?

A glass splashback meets two needs: the safety of toughened glass and complete customisation through colour, shape and edgework.

The different uses of a glass splashback

The kitchen remains its main territory:
        Upstand behind the sink or hob, cooker hood splashback, cladding the wall between the worktop and the wall units;
        For the top of the unit itself, see our glass worktops;
The same glass can also clad a wall, a niche or the back of a shelf elsewhere in the home.

        Frosted glass splashbacks

A glass kitchen splashback in frosted glass combines the elegance of a satin finish with the colour of your choice. Its satin surface eliminates reflections, softens the shade and gives the kitchen a calm atmosphere with a refined finish.

        Configure your splashback online

The made-to-measure splashback configurator lets you choose every detail: shape, dimensions, corners, edgework, thickness, clear or low-iron glass and colour. The price is displayed immediately, with a better price for black and white splashbacks, and our customer service team is on hand to answer your questions if needed.

Which splashback colour for your kitchen?

A made-to-measure splashback plays a central role in the design of a kitchen. To make it stand out, contrast between the glass and the other surfaces remains an effective choice. A coloured splashback creates a clear visual anchor against the units or the worktop and marks out the food preparation area. This approach works for a glass kitchen splashback fitted behind the hob, the sink or as continuous panels along the whole wall.

Lighting also makes a made-to-measure kitchen splashback stand out. An LED strip or a light directed onto the glass panel highlights the surface of the splashback and improves visibility in the kitchen. This technique works for a large splashback or for a smaller panel placed behind a specific work area.

Adding useful accessories completes the look. Wall brackets, hanging rails, pots of herbs, hanging utensils or decorative items link the made-to-measure splashback with the overall organisation of the kitchen. This combination creates a coherent whole that meets everyday needs while showing off the glass splashback.

Frequently asked questions about made-to-measure glass kitchen splashbacks

What is a glass kitchen splashback?

A glass kitchen splashback is a toughened glass panel fixed to the wall between the worktop and the wall units, behind the hob or the sink. It protects the wall from splashes of water, grease and heat. Opaque and coloured (back-painted glass), clear, frosted or printed, it suits every kitchen.

Glass splashback or tiled splashback: what is the difference?

A glass splashback forms a continuous surface, with no grout lines where grease and limescale build up: a quick wipe is all it takes. Toughened glass is 5 to 7 times stronger than standard glazing and withstands a temperature difference of around 200 °C. Installation is also quicker: a single piece to bond or fix, with no tiles or grouting.

How do I order a made-to-measure kitchen splashback online?

In the configurator, choose the shape, enter the dimensions to the millimetre, then the glass, colour and thickness. Add socket cut-outs, holes and rounded corners: the plan and price of your made-to-measure kitchen splashback are displayed instantly, along with the manufacturing lead time.

How do I measure for a made-to-measure glass splashback?

Measure the width and height of the area to be covered in several places, as a wall is never perfectly straight, and use the smallest measurement. Mark the position of sockets, switches and taps so you can place them in the configurator. Toughened glass has a tolerance of -1/+1 mm up to 2 metres, -2/+1 mm above that.

What colours and glass types are available for a glass kitchen splashback?

Opaque splashbacks are made in back-painted glass: the Plakglass selection, plus 188 RAL, 1950 NCS and 909 Pantone shades, in a gloss or matt finish. Light colours are truer on low-iron glass, while dark colours work well on clear glass. To keep the wall visible, choose a clear glass splashback; for a satin effect, a frosted glass splashback.

Does the price of a made-to-measure glass splashback depend on the colour?

Yes. White and black, the most popular shades, as well as the Plakglass selection are offered at a better price. The price also depends on the area, thickness, shape and edgework; it is calculated live in the configurator.

What thickness for a glass kitchen splashback?

6 mm is the most common thickness and the minimum behind a hob: a good balance between rigidity and ease of installation. 4 mm suits small panels away from the cooking area, 8 mm long runs. The configurator offers 4 to 19 mm.

Can a glass splashback be fitted behind a hob?

Yes, because the splashback is made of toughened glass and the colour is applied to the back, protected from the heat. With a gas hob or gas cooker, keep 12 to 15 cm between the flame and the glass. With induction or ceramic hobs, 6 to 8 cm is enough.

Can cut-outs be made for sockets and switches?

Yes: single, double or triple sockets, holes, notches and rounded corners are positioned in the configurator. They are made before toughening; a toughened splashback can no longer be cut or drilled after delivery.

How do I fit a glass kitchen splashback?

There are three methods, chosen when ordering: bonding to the wall with a suitable adhesive (available in the basket), fixing through holes made during manufacture, or mounting on profiles. An opaque splashback can be bonded over old flat tiles without removing them. A clear splashback is not bonded, as the adhesive would remain visible: it is fixed with holes or on a rail.

How long does it take to receive a made-to-measure glass splashback?

The lead time depends on the glass, the colour and the processing (cut-outs, holes, special shade). It is shown in the configurator when you order, before you confirm your basket. Delivery is available anywhere in mainland France, Belgium and Luxembourg.

How do I clean a glass kitchen splashback?

A standard glass cleaner and a soft cloth are all you need. Avoid strong solvents and abrasive sponges, which can scratch the visible face of the glass.

Does a glass splashback go with a wooden or stone worktop?

Yes. A glass splashback goes with every worktop: wood, stone, quartz, laminate or glass. Its smooth surface protects the wall and sets off the worktop, either in contrast or in the same shade.

What standard does a toughened glass splashback meet?

The splashback is made of safety glass toughened to European standard EN 12150: if it breaks, it shatters into small, blunt fragments. Painted glass for interior use falls under standard EN 16477; the back of a back-painted splashback is protected by a safety film, which must not be removed.
