Low-iron toughened glass and low-iron frosted toughened glass

Made-to-measure low-iron glass (clear or translucent)

Plakglass offers made-to-measure low-iron toughened glass in a clear or translucent finish, toughened, in all thicknesses from 4 to 19 mm.

Low-iron glass differs from standard glass in the way it is made: the amount of iron oxide is greatly reduced, which reduces the green colour on the edge, makes the glass almost colourless in its clear version, and gives it better light transmission.

Low-iron frosted glass is its translucent version. Low-iron toughened glazing is always edge-worked before going into the toughening furnace.

Low-iron toughened glass is highly transparent, even in large thicknesses, making it discreet glass that faithfully reproduces colours.

Difference between standard glass and low-iron glass

The differences between low-iron glass and standard (clear) glass

What is the difference between low-iron glass and float glass?

In this photo, you can see the difference in colour between the edge of low-iron glass and standard glass on an 8 mm thick sample.
The very slight colouring of low-iron glass, obtained by changing its chemical composition, means that the appearance and colours of a product shown in a display cabinet, for example, are not altered: it is an elegant, superior-quality clear glass.

        A premium clear glass

Low-iron glass is a premium glazing with few reflections, a superior-quality glazing. Low-iron glazing is mainly used where the edge of the glass is visible, as it looks more attractive. Made-to-measure low-iron Securit glass is toughened after edgework: it is the ideal glass for kitchen splashbacks and for decoration.

Practicality, slimness, colour rendering, strength, elegance and minimal tint make low-iron Securit glass the ideal choice for all your made-to-measure clear glass projects.

What is the difference between low-iron glass and extra-white glass?

The terms extra-white and low-iron (extra clear) refer to the same clear glass product. To avoid confusion with white back-painted glass and coloured glass, the term low-iron is the most widely used today.

        Frequently asked questions

What is the price per m² of low-iron glass by thickness?

The price depends on the thickness chosen. Here are the prices per m² for our most popular references in rectangular shapes: 4 mm from 65.80 €/m², 6 mm from 81.30 €/m² and 8 mm from 114.50 €/m². Prices may vary depending on the options chosen in the configurator.

What is low-iron glass and how does it differ from standard clear glass?

Low-iron glass is made with a greatly reduced amount of iron oxide, which reduces the green tint visible on the edge of standard glass. It is almost colourless and offers better light transmission, with more faithful colour rendering behind the glass.

What is the difference between low-iron glass and extra-white glass?

Low-iron (extra clear) and extra-white refer to the same glass product. The term low-iron is preferred today to avoid confusion with white back-painted glass or coloured glass.

Is an anti-limescale treatment available on low-iron glass?

Yes, an anti-limescale treatment (Timeless) is offered as an option on the front face of low-iron glass, in addition to the choice between a clear or frosted finish. Please note that an anti-limescale treatment is not compatible with frosted glass.

        Is low-iron glass really colourless?

It is not 100% neutral, but the green tint is so faint that it is imperceptible to the naked eye, unlike standard clear glass where it is clearly visible on the edge or on large stacked surfaces.

Is low-iron glass more expensive than standard clear glass?

Yes, as the manufacturing process is more demanding (reduction of iron oxide), low-iron glass costs more per m² than standard clear glass of the same thickness.

For which uses should low-iron glass be preferred over standard clear glass?

Low-iron glass is recommended whenever transparency or colour accuracy is a priority: display cabinets, decorative glass partitions, splashbacks with a coloured wall behind, or any use where the green tint of standard clear glass would be a problem.

What are the key technical points about low-iron glass?

Low-iron glass is treated to remove its natural green/blue tint and offer almost total transparency. It is available in a gloss finish from 4 mm, and in a frosted finish from 6 mm thick only. The anti-limescale treatment is only available from 8 mm.
