Glass edgework: edges, corners and cut-outs

Edges that are not sharp on all our glass
Edgework covers all the work carried out on the edges of a piece of glass: polishing, bevelling, rounded or clipped corners, notches, holes and cut-outs. It is done before toughening, because toughened glass can no longer be cut or drilled.
All edges, corners and angles of our toughened, enamelled and back-painted glass are supplied not sharp. By default, the outer edges have a glossy flat polished edge; options can be chosen in each configurator, with the price updated instantly.
Edge finishes

Seamed edges
The sharp arrises are removed; the edge remains as cut.

Flat polished edge (JPP)
Edge ground and polished, glossy appearance. This is the finish of our outer edges.

Bevel
Polished bevel of 20 to 45° on the top arris, glossy polished edge.
Standard and optional edgework
| Part of the glass | Standard edgework | Optional |
|---|---|---|
| Corners | At 90°, gloss polished | Clipped corners (cut diagonally); rounded corners, radius of your choice from 5 mm, gloss polished |
| Outer edges | Flat polished edge, glossy | Bevel of 20 to 45° on rectangular glass |
| Notch edges | Arrissed edge: ground, matt | Gloss polished for a rectangular notch larger than 60 x 60 mm; bevel possible with a radius of at least 60 mm |
| Inner corner | Matt ground, minimum radius equal to the glass thickness (at least 5 mm) | Gloss polished above 60 x 60 mm, minimum radius 15 mm (or the glass thickness if greater) |
| Internal cut-out edges | Matt ground; round hole under 100 mm: edges not sharp | Gloss polished for a rectangular cut-out larger than 60 x 60 mm or a round cut-out larger than 100 mm |
| Internal cut-out corners | Matt ground, minimum radius 5 mm (or the glass thickness) | Gloss polished, minimum radius 15 mm (or the glass thickness) |
Edgework glossary
- Flat polished edge (JPP): edge ground flat then polished, not sharp and glossy.
- Arrissed edge: ground edge, unpolished, not sharp and matt in appearance.
- Seamed edges: arrises softened, edge left as cut.
- Bevel: polished bevel on the arris of the glass, which makes thick glass look lighter.
- Clipped corner: corner cut diagonally.
- Notch: cut-out on the edge of the glass, for example to fit around a pipe or a wall.
- Internal cut-out: hole or opening inside the glass, for a socket, a mixer tap or a hob.
Edgework suited to every use
Rounded corners are recommended for a table top or a desk. A bevel shows off a top or a hearth plate. Notches and cut-outs let you adapt a splashback to your sockets and cooker hood. All this edgework can be drawn in the toughened glass configurator.
Edgework on fluted and ribbed glass
Fluted and ribbed glass (reeded, Visio Sun, Raywall 90) is worked like any other glass, before toughening: flat polished edges that are not sharp, rounded or clipped corners, holes, notches and cut-outs.
There is just one exception: no bevel. The relief of the grooves does not allow a regular bevelled arris, which is why the configurator does not offer this option on these glass types. To compare the patterns, discover all our ribbed glass.
Frequently asked questions about glass edgework
Are the edges of your glass sharp?
No. All our toughened, enamelled and back-painted glass is supplied with edges, corners and angles that are not sharp: glossy flat polished edges on the outside, matt arrissed edges in the cut-outs.
What is a flat polished edge?
It is an edge ground flat and then polished: the edge is smooth, glossy and safe. It is the standard finish for our outer edges.
Can a bevel be added to any glass?
Bevels are made on rectangular glass, at an angle of 20 to 45°. On a notch or an inner corner, a bevel is possible from a radius of 60 mm.
What is the minimum radius for a rounded corner?
5 mm for an outer corner. In a cut-out, the minimum radius is 5 mm (or the glass thickness) with a matt finish and 15 mm with a polished finish.
Can toughened glass be recut or drilled?
No: any cutting or drilling after toughening will shatter the glass. That is why edgework, holes and cut-outs are carried out before toughening, according to the measurements in your order.
Which standard governs edgework and toughening?
Our glass is toughened to standard EN 12150. Among other things, it sets minimum distances between holes, cut-outs and the edges of the glass; our configurators check these automatically so that your glass can be toughened.
