Glass replacement: made-to-measure toughened glass panes

Replacing a pane with toughened glass
To replace the glass in a door, an interior window, a glass partition or a room divider, or a table top, Plakglass offers toughened safety glass, cut to your measurements.
Heated to over 600 °C and then rapidly cooled, toughened glass becomes around five times more resistant to impact and temperature changes than ordinary glass. And if it does break, it shatters into small, blunt fragments, which greatly reduces the risk of injury. Toughening does not affect the transparency of the glass.
The main uses of toughened glass

All our back-painted glass splashbacks are also made from toughened glass.
Ordering replacement glass
- Measure the old glass or the opening to the millimetre, at several points.
- Note the thickness of the original glass, or choose it with our glass thickness guide.
- Locate any holes, notches and rounded corners: they are drawn in the configurator, because toughened glass cannot be drilled after toughening.
- Configure and order online: the price is displayed immediately.
Frequently asked questions about glass replacement
How can I tell if my old glass was toughened?
Toughened glass often has a small mark in one corner. When it breaks, it shatters into small rounded pieces; ordinary glass breaks into large, sharp shards.
Can I replace ordinary glass with toughened glass?
Yes, and it is recommended for all indoor uses: at the same thickness, toughened glass is fitted in the same way and provides far greater safety.
Can toughened glass be re-cut to the right size?
No. Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening: it is made directly to your dimensions, with its holes and notches.
What thickness should I choose to replace a pane?
Use the original thickness so that it fits the rebate or the fixings. For a new use, see our glass thickness guide.
Is toughened glass heavier?
No, it weighs the same as ordinary glass of the same thickness: 2.5 kg per m² per millimetre.
To what standard is your glass toughened?
Our glass is toughened to standard EN 12150, which defines thermally toughened safety glass and its fragmentation behaviour.
